Attractions in Matarangi Beach

What an amazing playground with the Pacific Ocean on your doorstep, wonderful secluded offshore islands and fish and bird life to amaze! Whales and dolphins often visit us and can be viewed by boat and often from the shore.


Boating

Access is offered from Matarangi's own ramp on the Whangapoua Harbour, Kuaotunu ramp just over the hill or the eastern end of the beach for smaller craft. There is an all tide ski lane in the harbour. The offshore islands feature safe anchorage for the overnight trips and wonderful bays and sandy beaches for day trips and picnics. Be sure to check availability of access before you land on some of the islands.


Fishing and Diving

By boat enjoy game fishing for Marlin, Tuna, Sailfish and Mahimahi over the summer months and Hapuka and Bluenose later in the year all remarkably close at hand.

Kingfish, Snapper, Gurnard, Terakihi, Trevally and Kahawai are even closer with these fish also available to rockhoppers and surfcasters.

The 90 metre wharf is great for the kids and the harbour offers flounder and mullet for the netting fraternity.

Divers are catered for with excellent Cray fishing on the islands and up the Coromandel Coast and ample Scallop beds dotted throughout the area.

Other Attractions

Cathedral Cove

Accessible only on foot or by boat, famous Cathedral Cove is one of the must-visit sites on the Coromandel Peninsula. The track begins at the northern end of Hahei. The Cathedral is a gigantic arched cavern that penetrates the headland between two coves. It gives an air of grandeur to the whole of the beach.


Hot Water Beach

Within a certain area, naturally occurring hot water bubbles up to fill holes dug in the sand. Bring a shovel for easy digging or hire one from the Hot Water Beach Store next to the carpark.


Driving Creek Railway & Potteries

The 3km train ride climbs through replanted Kauri forest, civil engineering features and past interesting ceramic art works. From the top there is a wonderful view which overlooks Coromandel and beyond.
